I spent years thinking backless meant fully backless, like spine to waistband, nothing to see here but skin. Wrong. The best ones are far more considered than that, a slice, a strap, a dip that stops well before it gets awkward at a family christening. What makes a good one isn’t how much back it shows, it’s how it stays up without you doing the hourly shoulder yank. Look for proper construction at the sides, some kind of internal fixing, fabric with enough weight that it doesn’t ride or gape the second you lift an arm to wave at someone across a room.
The cheap version I bought first flew up at the back every time I sat down, which is a specific kind of horror in a booth seat. My colleague Priya watched it happen once and just said, “yeah, that’s not staying,” and she was right, it didn’t, for the rest of the night.

Jewellery moves to the back too, if you’re going to bother with anything, a low chain sitting between the shoulder blades does more work than earrings ever will.
These earn their place at anything with a bit of ceremony to it, dinner where you’ll be seated most of the night, a wedding where you’re not the one dancing badly by 11pm, drinks somewhere with proper lighting. They’re not an all day top, they’re a from six o’clock onwards top, and once you accept that, you stop trying to make them do a job they were never built for.
