There is a particular kind of beach dress that earns its place in the suitcase and a particular kind that ends up worn once to breakfast and never again, and the difference is almost always the cut through the body. Necklines and lengths matter more than colour, whatever the trend pieces tell you. A halter or square neck holds up over a bikini, a wrap style is forgiving after a big lunch, and a midi length that skims rather than sticks means you can walk from sand to pavement without hitching anything up.

Bright prints are lovely for the pool, but a plain linen shift in white or a warm neutral is the one you will reach for on the days you actually want to look put together, not just cool.

For styling, keep it simple. Flat sandals and a raffia bag by day, a stack of gold jewellery and the same dress with heels swapped in by evening, no need to overthink it further than that.

A denim jacket thrown over the top covers you for the walk back when the sun drops and the wind picks up, which it always does.

Where it earns its keep is anywhere the day has no fixed plan, a beach club lunch, a boat trip, a wander round a market town on holiday, straight through to a sunset drink without a change of clothes. That, more than anything, is what makes a beach dress worth packing rather than just buying.
