A navy jacket earns its keep by doing what black can’t quite manage: it reads as considered rather than safe, and it plays better with colour, denim and pattern without ever fighting for attention. The best ones have enough structure through the shoulder to hold their shape on a hanger and off it, a collar that sits flat rather than curling after one wear, and a length that clears the hip in a way that actually flatters trousers and skirts alike. Fabric weight matters more than most people admit. Too light and it creases into a paper bag by lunchtime, too heavy and it stops being something you reach for on instinct. Look for a wool or wool blend with a bit of body, or a cotton twill with enough density to hold a crease at the cuff without going stiff.
