I bought a beige coat in 2019 that made me look like I was auditioning for a role as a Sunday supplement estate agent. Too stiff, too yellow, too much shoulder padding for someone who has never once needed to look powerful at 8.40am on a Tuesday. Wool or a wool blend, structured but not stiff, a proper collar that stands up to wind on the walk from the station.
Styling it is almost insultingly easy once you’ve got the right one, which is annoying after how long I spent avoiding the colour entirely. It sits over a plain trouser and jumper without trying, does the same job over a shirt and skirt, and somehow makes trainers look like a choice rather than a compromise. The trick is contrast underneath, because beige on beige on beige turns into a fog and someone in a meeting will eventually ask if you’re feeling alright. Navy, black, a proper burgundy, all of it sharpens the coat up rather than fighting it.
Occasion wise it’s built for the exact stretch of life that has no obvious dress code, the client meeting straight after the school run, the train to a conference, the lunch you didn’t plan for but can’t turn up to looking like you slept on the sofa. A colleague once told me mine looked “expensive in a quiet way,” which is the only compliment I actually want about outerwear. It’s not a coat that shouts. It’s a coat that means you never have to explain yourself before 9am.
