A good parka earns its keep through construction, not branding. The shell needs real weight to it, a cotton or nylon blend that holds a crease without going papery, and the lining should be substantial enough to trap heat without turning the whole coat into a duvet. Look at the drawcords and the storm flap before anything else. A parka that cinches properly at the waist and hood will always read sharper than one that hangs like a tent, because the whole point of the silhouette is that it can be loose through the body and still controlled at the edges. The best ones have a hood with actual structure, wire or boning through the brim, so it frames the face instead of collapsing into a floppy hole when the weather turns.

Anything that stops mid thigh starts to look like a school uniform, whereas a hem that hits just above or below the knee gives the coat proper presence and lets it work over most of what you already own underneath. That length also does the practical job a parka is meant to do, which is cover a jumper, a blazer, even a midi dress, without any of it peeking out awkwardly at the bottom.
Styling one well is mostly about resisting the urge to bulk everything else up to match. Underneath, keep things closer to the body, a fine knit, a shirt, slim trousers or jeans, so the coat has room to do its job as the loose, outer layer.
Boots ground it, whether that is something chunky and practical or a sleeker knee high for evening. A parka also tolerates a bit of tailoring underneath better than people expect, a blazer under a parka on a cold commute looks considered rather than clashing.
Occasion wise, this is the coat for anything that involves standing outside for longer than five minutes, station platforms, football touchlines, school runs, market stalls. It has no interest in being precious, which is exactly why it belongs in heavy rotation from late autumn through to the coldest part of spring, doing the unglamorous work that more delicate coats simply cannot.
