I said for years that beige biker jackets were a cop out. The nervous middle child of outerwear, worn by people who wanted the edge of leather without committing to actually looking like they might key your car. I owned a black one, obviously, and I judged the beige ones on the rail like they’d personally wronged me. I was wrong, and I’ll say it properly, beige biker jacket, I’m sorry, you were never the boring option, you were just better at your job than I gave you credit for.
What a good one actually does is soften the aggression of the shape without losing the point of it. That structured shoulder, the zips, the cropped body, all still there, but in a colour that doesn’t announce itself before you’ve walked into the room.
It reads considered rather than costume, which black leather can tip into if you’re not careful, particularly paired with anything remotely rock and roll adjacent, at which point you’re one studded belt away from a tribute act.
The fit is where people go wrong, mine included, in a changing room in 2019 buying one a full size up because I panicked about not being able to raise my arms. Don’t do that. It needs to sit close through the shoulder and skim the waist, cropped enough that it stops at the top of your jeans, not hovering awkwardly at hip level like it’s not sure it’s been invited.
Styling wise, it’s doing the most work when everything underneath it is quiet. A white shirt, a slip dress, a plain jumper, all fine, all a bit more interesting the second the jacket goes on. It sits properly against denim, obviously, but it’s also the thing that stops a floral dress looking like it’s headed to a garden party rather than out for the evening. Tan or camel accessories make sense with it, but so does black, don’t overthink the matching.
Occasion wise it’s the jacket you reach for when you want to look like you tried without admitting to it, over a dress for a wedding you’re not in, thrown on for drinks straight after work, on a plane because it doesn’t crease and nobody needs to know you slept in it slightly.
