I spent about three years thinking beige was the colour equivalent of saying “no worries either way” when someone asks what you want for dinner. Fine. Inoffensive. Nothing. My friend Priya actually said “that’s a very apologetic skirt” about one I owned in 2019 and honestly, fair, it was. It had no opinion of its own.
I have completely changed my mind and I need to say that properly, out loud, to beige itself: I was wrong about you, and I’m sorry it took a decade.
What makes a beige skirt actually work is the same thing that makes it fail. There’s no colour to hide behind, so the cut and the fabric have to do all the talking. A good one has proper structure, a bit of weight to the fabric so it doesn’t cling or crease the second you sit down on public transport, and a shape that’s decided what it wants to be, whether that’s a sharp midi with a bit of swing or something slouchier and skirt shaped in a way that still holds its line. A bad one just looks like it gave up halfway through being designed, and you end up looking like you’re heading to open a village fete, which I have, unfortunately, looked like before.
The styling trick nobody tells you is that beige wants contrast, not more beige. Head to toe neutral on a bad day reads like you got dressed in the dark and gave up. Put it with something with actual colour or texture, a bold knit, a proper black boot, a bag with some shine to it, and suddenly the skirt looks intentional rather than accidental. It also does something clever with white and cream that black never manages, softer, less severe, which is why it earns its place at anything daytime, brunches, gallery wandering, the kind of office where nobody’s checking if your trousers match your blazer.
Where it properly shines is transitional weather, that horrible stretch where it’s not quite jumper season and not quite bare legs season either. Layer tights under it, boots, a jacket that can come off, and you’ve got something that looks considered without trying too hard. It’s not a shouty piece. It’s the one that makes everything else you’re wearing look more expensive than it is.
