I used to think belts were an afterthought, the thing you grabbed to stop your trousers falling down, nothing more. Then I bought a stiff, shiny, bargain bin one for a job interview about eight years ago and it creaked every time I sat down, an actual audible creak, and the woman interviewing me definitely heard it. Belts stopped being an afterthought that day.
A proper belt does two jobs at once, it holds things up and it tells people something about how much thought went into the rest of the outfit. The good ones have real weight to them, leather that’s had a chance to soften rather than plastic dressed up to look like it, and a buckle that feels like it could survive being sat on, dropped, and yanked through a loop a hundred times without going dull or bending out of shape. Width matters more than people think.
A slim belt threaded through tailored trousers reads completely differently to a wide one cinched over a coat, and knowing which one you actually need before you buy is half the skill.
Styling wise, the trick is to stop treating a belt as a functional afterthought and start treating it as the thing that finishes the silhouette. Over a shirt dress it adds shape where there wasn’t any. Cinched at the waist of an oversized coat it turns something shapeless into something deliberate, my sister did this with an old wool coat of mine and looked ten times more pulled together than I ever managed in it. Looped through wide trousers with a simple top, it becomes the only detail doing any work, so it earns the right to be a bit louder, a bit more buckle, a bit more presence.
Occasion wise, this is not a category to save for best. A good leather belt goes from the office to dinner without changing, a slightly dressier one turns jeans into something that could pass for smart casual with almost no other effort, and at a wedding it’s often the belt, not the dress, holding the whole look together. Buy the one that feels substantial in your hand. It’s doing more than you’re giving it credit for.
