A ruched skirt earns its place through construction, not decoration. Gathering that runs consistently through a stretch jersey or a fine ponte will pull in at the waist and release over the hip without bunching into odd little pockets of fabric, which is the giveaway of a cheaper version. Look closely at where the ruching sits: through the side seams for a flattering column effect, or asymmetric and gathered to one hip for something with more movement. Either works, but the gathering has to be doing something structural, shaping the body, rather than just sitting on the surface as texture for its own sake.
Fabric weight matters more than pattern here. A skirt that is too light will cling in the wrong places and lose its shape by midafternoon, while something with a bit of substance, a heavier jersey, a scuba, a good stretch crepe, holds the ruching in place and skims rather than clings.

Because the skirt already has volume and detail built in, the top half should stay simple: a fitted rib knit, a plain silk cami, a tailored shirt with the sleeves pushed up. Anything too fussy on top competes with the ruching rather than complementing it. A structured blazer thrown over a simple top and ruched skirt reads instantly more considered than a full outfit of statement pieces fighting for attention.
Length changes the occasion entirely. A midi ruched skirt in a darker tone does the work of smart eveningwear without trying too hard, particularly with a heeled boot and minimal jewellery. A mini version, especially in a lighter or brighter colourway, belongs to daytime events with a bit of energy, garden parties, long lunches, anything with good light and a reason to be seen. Sandals or a low block heel keep it from tipping into overdressed. Either length photographs well precisely because the gathering catches light and shadow in a way flat fabric never quite manages.
