A good shirt dress does something quite specific: it borrows the structure of menswear tailoring and lets it fall loose over the body instead of nipping in. That’s the whole appeal. Styling one is largely about deciding how much structure to add back in. Belted at the waist with the sleeves pushed up, it works for daytime meetings or lunch somewhere with good light. Left open over a plain vest and trousers, it becomes outerwear, a layer rather than a dress, and that’s often the more interesting way to wear it. Boots take it into autumn without any fuss, while bare legs and flat sandals keep it firmly in warmer months. It rarely needs jewellery beyond something small at the neckline, since the collar is already doing the talking.
Occasion wise, this is the piece for the days that need one item to do several jobs, travel, transitional weather, an event that starts as work and ends as something more social. It photographs well because the lines are clean, and it packs well because the fabric that makes it look sharp is usually the same fabric that survives a suitcase without complaint.
