A good sequin top has weight to it. Pick one up and it should feel dense in the hand, sequins packed close with barely any mesh showing through, because that density is what stops the fabric looking cheap under light and what stops it grabbing at tights or jewellery every time you move. Cheaper versions use a wide weave with visible gaps between discs, and within a few wears the sequins start dropping or the backing starts to pucker. The better ones are usually sewn onto a stretch mesh or a fine knit base, which means the top moves with the body rather than sitting stiff, and it also means the fit can be closer without looking constructed. Loose, boxy sequin tops rarely work as well as something with a bit of shape, because the whole appeal of the fabric is the way it catches light off the body, not off a shapeless drape of fabric hanging away from it.

A sequin top wants to sit close through the body, whether that is a fitted long sleeve, a fine strap camisole or a boxier cropped shape worn deliberately loose, but the fit should look like a decision rather than an accident.
Necklines matter more than colour here. A high neck or long sleeve in sequin reads modern and slightly severe, which is useful if you want the top to look considered rather than purely decorative. A cami or cowl neck version leans more directly into evening dressing and works best with something structured underneath, a blazer or a tailored coat, so the shine has a foil rather than sitting on its own.
The styling that works hardest is the one that treats sequin as texture rather than as fancy dress. Worn under a plain wool blazer with straight trousers, it reads sharp and controlled rather than costume. Tucked into denim with boots and a leather jacket, it takes an ordinary daytime uniform and gives it enough reason to go out that night without a full change. Layering a sequin top under a slip dress or a sheer shirt, so only slivers of it show, tends to look more expensive than wearing it head on.
Occasion wise, this is the top that earns its keep across the party stretch of the year, but it also has a place at less obvious moments, a long lunch, a low key dinner, anywhere that calls for a bit more shine without asking for a full costume change.
