A good sleeveless dress earns that title through the armhole, not the absence of a sleeve. For evening, a low block heel and a smaller bag say more than obvious jewellery, and a slip of a slim jacket in the same tonal family keeps it from looking like two separate outfits pushed together. Layer a fine polo neck underneath in colder months and the same dress runs on for another season instead of retiring to summer only.
Occasion wise, this is the shape to reach for whenever the day has more than one register, an office that runs into drinks, a wedding that starts at a lunch and ends late, travel where a case has to do double duty. It flatters because it is uncomplicated, and it moves with the day because there is no sleeve to fight a jacket or a bag strap. The plainer the base, the harder it works, and the more it deserves a proper hem and a fabric that has clearly been chosen to last past one season.
