I spent three years convinced bucket bags were a festival thing, a floppy suede situation that belonged with wellies and a bum bag, not with a blazer. I was wrong, and I want to address that directly because I held the opinion loudly and for too long. A black bucket bag, done properly, is one of the more sensible things you can carry to an office, and I say that as someone who used to roll her eyes at anyone who brought one into a Monday morning meeting.
What makes a good one isn’t the drawstring or the shape, it’s the structure underneath. The soft, slouchy ones look lovely on a hook but collapse the second you put a laptop in, and you end up fishing your phone out from under a paperback and a half eaten flapjack for three minutes while someone holds a lift door. A proper one has a bit of a base, enough give to look relaxed but enough shape to stay upright on a desk, on a train seat, on the floor of a taxi without folding in on itself like a sad little sack.
Leather over suede, always, for an office one specifically. Suede shows a wet pavement in about four seconds flat and you will find that out on the one day it actually matters. Black cuts down the decision making entirely, it goes under a coat, over a blazer, against navy, against camel, against whatever you grabbed off the chair at 7am without properly looking.
Styling wise, it wants to sit slightly away from the body, on the shoulder or crossbody, not clutched to the chest like you’re protecting it from pigeons.
It looks sharp against tailoring, a structured coat, a plain jumper, anything with a clean line, because the bag itself is doing the softer, rounder work. It’s good at client meetings, good at the school run turned straight into a nine o’clock, good at the bit where you go for drinks after work and don’t want to look like you’re still carrying your whole desk with you.
The drawstring top is the one bit I’ll defend without reservation. Grab and go, no zips, no fumbling, which matters more at 8.52am than any of us like to admit.
