A V neck jumper does one simple thing better than a crew neck: it opens up the neckline without having to wear a shirt underneath to justify it. That’s it. That’s the appeal. The slope of the neck drags the eye downwards and lengthens everything on top of the waist line, which explains why it works for so many body types and why it looks equally good thrown over a dress shirt or worn on its own. Done well they’re cut slim enough to cling to your figure rather than drown it, with a rib detail down neck and cuff that holds it’s shape after years of abuse instead of ballooning into a baggy wavy edge after two weeks.
Fabric is half the battle. A lightweight merino or cotton with a touch of cashmere mixed in will lay flat to your skin and layer without adding bulk, whereas a thicker chunky knit wants to be worn as a statement on it’s own.
They both work, just don’t mistake one for the other. A jumper that you’ll layer under a blazer needs a completely different weight to a sweater you plan on throwing over jeans on lazy Saturday mornings.
Other than that, styling is fairly straightforward. Everything revolves around the neck.
Throwing a shirt collar on underneath adds structure to the look. It takes a soft jumper and gives it edges to turn it from looking casual to looking considered. Tuck into smart trousers with the sleeves rolled up and it works in an office. Wear it baggy over a slip skirt or boyfriend jeans and it’s ready for evening without trying too hard. Slip a thin gold chain or knot a scarf on days when bare neck feels too bare.
It truly comes into it’s own during that in-between time when it’s too warm for a coat but too cool for just a shirt. Runs with you to work, keeps you warm on lunch appointments, makes downtown shopping feel respectable. It’s your go to for that post-work drink where everyone knows the dress code is smart but nobody wears a suit. Boxy, thick knit jumpers that make you disappear are overrated. What you want is something slim, that stays put, and a V that’s deep enough to count but shallow enough to wear all day.
