I used to think a black blazer for going out meant borrowing the one from my work bag, the boxy, sensible one that made me look like I was about to chair a meeting rather than order a second espresso martini. Wrong blazer, wrong energy, and it took me an embarrassingly long time to work out that a night out blazer needs its own personality entirely.
The good ones have a bit of shape to them. Nipped at the waist, or at least cut so it doesn’t sit like a box on your shoulders, with a lapel that has some presence, sharp or satin edged, something that catches light under bar lighting rather than disappearing into it. Fabric matters more than people think. A slight sheen, a bit of weight to it, something that swings when you move rather than just hangs.
The shoulder is the whole game. Too padded and you look like you’re in a power struggle with 1987. Too soft and it just looks like a cardigan that’s lost confidence in itself.
Styling one is where the fun starts. Skin under it, obviously, that’s the whole trick, a bit of collarbone or back doing the work so the blazer reads as the outfit rather than outerwear you forgot to take off.
Worn open over a slip dress it does something a normal jacket can’t, it makes the whole thing look considered rather than thrown on. Cinched with a belt over trousers and nothing else underneath, it goes from smart to something with actual attitude. Sleeves pushed up, always, there’s no version of a good blazer that doesn’t improve with the sleeves shoved up to the elbow.
It earns its place for the nights that need a bit of armour, dinners where you want to feel sharp rather than soft, a leaving do, a bar you’ve never been to and want to walk into like you own the postcode. It’s the thing you put on when jeans and a top isn’t quite enough occasion but a full dress feels like too much effort. Slightly too big is fine, borrowed off a bigger frame is fine, that’s part of its whole appeal, actually. Structured but a little undone. That’s the mood it’s built for.
