A white coat only earns its place if the fabric can hold the colour without looking chalky or see-through by lunchtime. Wool and wool blends with a tight, dense weave are the ones that behave, they drape rather than stiffen, and they shrug off a light drizzle instead of soaking it up and turning grey at the hem. Cotton drill and cotton twill versions work for milder months but need a proper structure to the shoulder and a decent weight to the cloth, otherwise they collapse into something closer to a lab coat than outerwear. The construction matters more here than in almost any other coat colour, because there is nowhere for a cheap lining or a puckered seam to hide. Check the inside as carefully as the outside, a coat that is fully lined and neatly finished at the cuffs and hem is the one that will still look considered after a winter of wear.

Too fitted and they read as costume, too oversized and the colour swamps the rest of the outfit.
The ones that work best sit somewhere in the middle, with enough room through the shoulder to layer a jumper underneath but a defined enough line at the waist or collar to stop it looking like a sheet. Styling one is less about matching and more about contrast. White against black, navy, camel or deep green looks considered rather than try hard, and it is a brilliant way to lift a plain outfit without adding another colour into the mix. Denim underneath keeps it grounded and stops the whole look feeling too polished. Boots, whether flat or heeled, tend to suit it better than trainers, which can tip it into sportswear rather than outerwear.
Occasion wise, this is a daytime coat first, brilliant for the school run, for meetings, for weekend errands where you want to look put together without appearing to have tried. It also does surprising work over evening dressing, thrown over a slip dress or tailored trousers on the way to dinner, where the brightness against darker fabrics reads as deliberate rather than accidental.
