I said for years that bodycon dresses were a young person’s game, strictly for those who could eat a single grape for lunch and call it a day. I was wrong, and I’m addressing that opinion directly now because it cost me at least three good nights out where I wore a shapeless smock instead and felt worse, not better. A properly cut black bodycon dress doesn’t demand a particular body, it demands a particular fabric, and that’s the whole secret nobody tells you in the shop.
What separates a good one from a bad one is almost entirely in the stretch. Cheap ones go baggy at the knee by nine o’clock and start looking like they’ve been through a wash cycle you didn’t ask for. A good one has proper weight to the jersey or scuba, holds its shape through a full evening of dancing, sitting, getting into a taxi at an angle no dress should have to handle, and still looks the same at midnight as it did at seven.

Styling one is less complicated than people make it. A blazer worn open does something clever, softens the whole silhouette without hiding it, good for dinner somewhere with actual cutlery. Boots, a leather jacket and a bit of gold jewellery drags it younger and rougher for a night that’s more bar than restaurant. Skip anything else black on black unless you want to look like you’re heading to a funeral you’re slightly underdressed for.
Occasion wise, this is your dress for birthdays, engagement drinks, the work do where you want to look like you tried without looking like you spent your lunch break shopping for it. It photographs well, it travels well folded in a bag, and it never once asks you to iron it. Own a genuinely good one and you’ll reach for it more than anything else in that section of the wardrobe, repeatedly, slightly embarrassingly often.
