I told Priya for years that black to a summer wedding was basically wearing a full stop to someone’s happiest sentence. I was wrong, and I’ve had to sit with that.
Black floral is the loophole nobody tells you about. You get the correctness of black, the bit that means you’re not competing with the bridesmaids or accidentally matching the marquee lining, but the print stops it reading as remotely funereal. A good one has flowers that actually do something, proper scale, a bit of colour bleeding through the black rather than a stingy little sprig print that looks like it’s apologising for itself. Ditty florals on black go a bit granny curtain.
You want blooms with some confidence, and ideally fabric with enough weight that it moves when you do instead of clinging to you in a marquee at 4pm.
Styling wise, this is not the dress to overthink. Gold jewellery lifts it properly, something with a bit of shine so it doesn’t all sink into one dark note.
A strappy heel if there’s grass involved and you fancy your chances, a wedge if you’ve learned from experience, which I have, at a barn wedding in 2019, ten minutes, both heels, gone. Bag small, cardigan or light jacket for the inevitable churchyard chill nobody warns you about, and that’s it. It doesn’t need help.
Where it properly earns its place is the awkward middle ground occasions, the ones where “smart” and “not boring” are both required at once. Wedding in the afternoon running into evening, christening that’s secretly quite a big deal, the sort of garden party where somebody’s mother will be watching what you wear. It reads considered without looking like you tried too hard, and it survives a long day of standing about holding a warm drink better than anything pale ever will, no visible grass stains, no wine panic, no second dress packed in the car boot, which I have absolutely done and would recommend against.
If you only take one thing from this: buy it with a bit of drama in the print. Restrained black florals just look like a work dress that’s had a wobble.
