I spent about four years thinking I owned a proper black dress and actually owned a black dress that only worked if I stood still, didn’t sit down, and never once raised my arms above shoulder height. It was structured in the way that means rigid. I wore it to a leaving do in 2019 and spent the whole night holding a glass of warm prosecco like a shield because I couldn’t bend my elbow properly. That’s the thing nobody tells you about black dresses, that black doesn’t automatically mean sorted, it just means you’ve delayed the reckoning by one colour choice.
A good one earns its place by doing something specific well, not by being vaguely acceptable at everything. Look for a fabric with actual movement in it, something that skims rather than grips, because black is unforgiving about static cling and static cling is unforgiving about you at 11pm on a dance floor.
A neckline that does some of the work on its own is worth more than any amount of embellishment, and a hem that doesn’t need constant tugging is a small daily mercy you’ll only appreciate once you’ve lived without it.
Styling one is genuinely the easy part, which is why it’s such a relief to have a few good ones in rotation rather than one panicked black dress you drag out for everything. Bare legs and proper heels for the evening version, opaque tights and boots for the daytime one that has to survive a commute and then a dinner, a denim jacket thrown over the top the second it stops being an event and starts being a Tuesday.
Gold jewellery warms it up, silver sharpens it, and a coloured coat over the top does more for a black dress than any accessory ever will.
Occasion wise it covers more ground than people give it credit for. Funerals obviously, weddings where you’re not sure of the dress code, work dinners, dates you haven’t decided how you feel about yet, the school pickup after a meeting you didn’t have time to change out of. The whole point of a black dress is that it should never announce itself as an outfit choice, it should just quietly be the correct answer, whatever the actual question turns out to be.
