I spent about four years convinced black denim skirts were a trap. Too try hard for the office, too stiff for anywhere with music, that weird length that’s either a tea towel or a tourniquet. I owned three of them by 2019 and wore none of them. Turns out the problem wasn’t the category, it was that I kept buying the wrong version and blaming the whole idea.
The right one is a completely different proposition. Black denim behaves better than blue, it doesn’t fade the same way, doesn’t go that patchy grey at the seat after eight washes, and it reads dressier without doing any actual work.
A good one holds its shape without going cardboard on you, has enough weight that it doesn’t crease the second you sit down on a train, and sits properly at the waist rather than needing constant adjustment. Midi or knee length is where this category earns its keep. Go shorter and it starts negotiating with a going out top instead of just wearing well with one.
Styling wise, this is the piece that makes the rest of your outfit easier, not harder. A fine knit tucked in and boots for anything after 5pm, a crisp white shirt half tucked for the office, an oversized jumper and trainers if you’re doing the school run and pretending you have your life together. It takes a leather jacket without trying to compete with it, which blue denim never quite manages.
Tights in winter, bare legs the second it’s above about 14 degrees, no negotiation.
Occasion wise, it’s doing more than people give it credit for. Dinner with people you’re trying to impress slightly. A work thing that isn’t quite smart enough for trousers but too important for jeans. A day that starts at a desk and ends somewhere with better lighting, because you can change the top and the shoes and never touch the skirt. My colleague Priya wore hers three days running last winter, different top each time, and nobody clocked it until she told them, which is either a triumph of styling or proof nobody’s paying attention. I’m choosing to believe the former. It’s the kind of piece that looks considered without you having to actually think that hard on the morning it matters.
