I spent about four years convinced black denim was a trap. Too gothy, too “I’m still figuring out my personality at 34”, too close to something you’d wear to see a band nobody’s heard of. I was wrong, and I’m saying that upfront because the black denim jacket is the one item on this page I actively fought against loving.
What changed it was noticing how much quieter it is than its blue counterpart. A good black denim jacket doesn’t shout workwear or nostalgia the way vintage blue does, it just sits there looking sorted. The best ones keep proper structure through the shoulder and a bit of weight to the fabric, nothing thin or papery that folds like cardboard the second you sit down.
You want it to feel closer to a jacket than a shirt, with hardware that’s actually black or gunmetal rather than shiny silver buttons fighting the whole point of the thing.
Styling it is where it earns its keep. Over a slip dress it stops things looking too bridal or too committed to one mood. With black trousers and a plain top it does that trick where the whole outfit reads as considered without anyone being able to say why.
Thrown over a floral dress it takes the sweetness down a notch, which I needed telling more than once. It’s also unreasonably good with grey, better than blue denim ever managed, there’s something about black on grey that looks intentional rather than accidental laundry day.
Occasion wise it’s doing the work most people ask a leather jacket to do, minus the bit where leather jackets always look slightly too pleased with themselves. Daytime, it goes over almost anything without turning the outfit into A Look. Evening, it’s the thing you grab when you want to leave the house looking like you tried but didn’t sit in front of the mirror for forty minutes. It survives being sat on the floor at a friend’s flat, being rained on walking to the tube, being slung over a chair at a restaurant that turns out to have no coat hooks, which is more than I can say for half the jackets I’ve owned.
I’m properly annoyed it took me this long to come round. Buy it like you mean it, not as an afterthought to blue.
