I spent about four years buying black jumpers that were technically black jumpers and technically jumpers, and that’s it, that’s the whole review. Thin, see through under office lighting, sleeves that rode up to elbow length the second I reached for a coffee cup. My colleague Priya once watched me tug mine down for the third time in a meeting and just said “is it fighting you back,” which, yes, correct, it was.
The good ones do one thing the bad ones never manage, they hold their shape without holding you hostage. A proper black jumper has enough weight in the knit that it drapes rather than clings, sits at the hip without needing constant rescuing, and has a neckline that stays put whether you’re leaning over a desk or a pram. Cropped ones have their place but for actual layering you want length, something that can sit under a coat and still poke out looking deliberate rather than like you forgot a layer.
That’s the whole point of this one, really, it’s built to go under things. Under a leather jacket it stops being a jumper and starts being a base layer with attitude.
Under a big wool coat with the collar popped it does that slightly severe, slightly French thing that makes a supermarket run feel like an outing. Tucked into wide leg trousers with boots it’s a Tuesday. Left loose over a slip skirt with the sleeves pushed up it’s a Friday that has plans it hasn’t mentioned yet. I’ve worn the same jumper to a funeral, a first date, and a school nativity in the space of one week and it did not clock a single one of those as inappropriate, which is more than I can say for most of my other clothes.
Where it actually earns its keep is the in between weather nobody dresses for properly, that October to March stretch where it’s too warm for a big coat indoors and too cold to skip a layer outdoors. Over it, under it, tied round the waist when you inevitably overheat on public transport, it just adapts. I no longer own the thin version. I learned that lesson in a changing room mirror I’m not revisiting.
