I spent years insisting that black mules were a “nearly shoe”, the thing you wear when you can’t be bothered with a proper shoe. I was wrong, and I’ve come round to it slowly, the way you come round to a person you didn’t like at first. A good black mule is not a compromise. It’s the shoe that gets you out the door in ninety seconds flat when everything else needs buckling, zipping or negotiating with, and it still looks like you made an effort, even when you very much did not.
What makes a good one is mostly about the back half of the shoe, which sounds mad until you’ve worn a bad pair on a proper walk and felt your heel doing all the work to keep it on. You want a heel counter with some structure, a sole that doesn’t slap when you walk fast, and a shape that sits close enough to the foot that it doesn’t look like you’re wearing someone else’s shoes to the shop.
Square toe, pointed toe, kitten heel, block heel, all fine, all a matter of taste, but the fit through the middle of the foot is where the good ones separate from the ones that end up at the back of the cupboard by October.
Styling wise, this is where black mules earn their keep. Bare ankle with a cropped trouser or a straight leg turned up once, and suddenly a work outfit looks like you thought about it rather than just got dressed. With a midi skirt and a substantial coat they do the thing trainers can’t, which is look like you’re going somewhere rather than just leaving the house. Over a sheer sock with a slip dress for the kind of evening that starts at six and you’re not sure when it ends. And honestly, with jeans and nothing else remarkable happening, they’re doing more work than they get credit for.
Occasion wise they’re not trying to be the statement, and that’s exactly the appeal. Office days, dinners you didn’t plan an outfit for, the wedding guest look that needs a break from heels by nine, the school run that becomes lunch that becomes a proper afternoon. They’re the shoe you reach for when you want to look sorted without anyone clocking that you tried.
