I used to think ruching was a cheat code for hiding a bad day of eating, and honestly, it still is, but that’s not actually why it works. Occasion wise, this is the dress for the birthday dinner where you want to look like you tried without looking like you’re trying to compete with the birthday person, the work do where the brief is unclear so you’re hedging your bets, the date where you want a bit of shape without any fuss. It photographs well, which matters more than people admit, and it survives sitting down at a table for three hours without creasing into something that needs apologising for. That’s the actual test of a good one, not how it looks walking in, but how it looks walking out.
