I owned three black oversized jumpers by the time I was 26, all bought within about eight months of each other, all convinced each one was “different” from the last. They were not different. I just kept forgetting what I already had because they all disappear into one shapeless memory of black wool. That’s the trap with this category, you don’t remember them individually, you just remember reaching for one on a Tuesday and feeling instantly less stressed about getting dressed.
What makes a genuinely good one isn’t complicated but it’s specific. Weight matters more than people think, too thin and it just looks like a jumper that shrank in the wash, too heavy and it stops being oversized and starts being a blanket with sleeve holes.
The neckline does a lot of quiet work too, a slightly dropped shoulder or a wider crew reads deliberate, whereas a tight little ribbed neck on a big body of a jumper just looks like a mistake in proportion. And the sleeve length has to actually commit, I want a proper cuff I can shove up my forearms, not something that stops apologetically at the wrist bone.
Styling one is genuinely the easy part, which is half of why I keep buying them. Tucked into a slip skirt with boots, it stops being lazy and starts looking like you tried, which you didn’t, but nobody needs to know that. Over a straight leg trouser it does something quite sharp, all the volume up top balancing out a cleaner line below. My colleague Priya once told me my jumper made me look “like I run a very cool but slightly intimidating gallery,” which I’ve decided to take as the highest compliment this item type can receive.
Where it properly earns its place is in the moments you don’t want to think hard about, the coffee run in genuinely awful weather, the train journey where you want to disappear into your own collar, the Sunday where getting dressed at all feels like a personal achievement. It also does surprisingly well dressed up, worn under a blazer with proper trousers, because there’s something in the contrast of soft, slouchy black against something more structured that reads considered rather than accidental. Buy one good one before you buy your third mediocre one. Learn from me.
