I spent about three years thinking a black sleeveless dress was a “smart occasion” thing, the sort you wear once to a wedding with a cardigan clamped over the top so nobody sees your arms, then hang back up feeling faintly guilty. Total waste of a good dress. The black sleeveless dress is actually the hardest working thing in the brunch rotation, it just needed me to stop treating it like it was made of glass.
What makes one worth having isn’t the black, obviously, it’s the cut around the shoulder and the weight of the fabric. A good one sits close enough at the neckline that you’re not hoiking a strap up every time you reach for the coffee pot, and it’s got enough substance in the fabric that it doesn’t cling or crease the second you sit down at a table for two hours, which, let’s be honest, is the entire point of brunch. Thin and slippy looks cheap by the second mimosa.
Structured and slightly heavier looks like you tried, in a way that reads as “I have my life together” rather than “I googled brunch outfit at 8am.”
Styling wise, this is where the black sleeveless dress earns its keep, because it does absolutely nothing on its own and everything with the right layer. A denim jacket knotted or left open makes it look unbothered. A blazer with the sleeves pushed up makes it look like you’re going somewhere after. Trainers keep it relaxed, a decent flat sandal in summer, boots the second it turns cold.
Gold jewellery, not silver, black wants warmth against it or it goes a bit funeral. My friend Priya once told me my all black brunch look made her feel like she was being served divorce papers with her eggs, which, fair, that’s the one wrong turn with this dress, no jacket, no jewellery, just black on black on a Saturday morning looking like very bad news.
Occasion wise it’s built for exactly this, the long lazy weekend sit down, birthday brunches, the reunion with someone you haven’t seen since a wedding, anywhere you want to look like you made an effort without announcing that you tried. It photographs well in bad restaurant lighting too, which nobody admits matters but it absolutely does.
