I said for years that a black shirt dress was what you wore when you couldn’t decide what else to wear, the fashion equivalent of shrugging. My colleague Priya called mine “the surrender dress” because I only reached for it on days I’d lost an argument with my wardrobe. I want to formally apologise to it now, because I was wrong, and it’s taken about six versions and one genuinely bad wash cycle to get there.
The ones worth actually spending on have proper collar structure, a button placket that doesn’t gape the second you sit down, and enough weight in the fabric that it moves like a coat rather than clings like a nightie. That’s the whole test. Hold it up and if it looks like it would survive a gust of wind on a station platform without going see through, you’re onto something.
Too thin and you’re wearing a cheap curtain to a wedding. Too stiff and you look like you’re delivering a hostage statement.
Styled properly this thing does more work than almost anything else in the black clothing category. Belted, with boots, it’s got a proper shape and reads as an outfit rather than a nightshirt someone forgot to change out of. Left open over a vest and jeans it’s basically a jacket with better manners. Sleeves rolled and paired with trainers on a Sunday, buttoned to the collar with heels for something that needs a bit more seriousness, it flexes without ever needing you to think hard about it.
Where it actually earns its keep is the in between occasions nobody dresses for properly, the drinks after work that might become dinner, the christening you’re not sure how formal, the flight where you want to look assembled at both ends. It survived an entire twelve hour journey on me once without creasing into something embarrassing, which is more than I can say for most trousers I own.
Buy it slightly oversized rather than fitted, you can always belt it in but you can’t get room back. And get the length right for your own height rather than whatever looked good in a photo, because a shirt dress that hits wrong reads as either a costume or an accident, and there is genuinely no in between.
