I used to think a black skirt was a black skirt, buy whatever was nearest the till, and then spend the whole night at the bar tugging the hem down like I was trying to solve a crossword clue with my hands. Took me about six skirts and one deeply regrettable satin number from about 2014 to work out that the good ones aren’t about the colour at all, they’re about the shape doing something the fabric can’t fake.
What I actually want from a black skirt built for going out is weight. Not heavy like armour, but enough substance that it holds its own line when you sit down, stand up, get shoved gently towards a taxi by someone impatient. A skirt that creases the second you sit through one round of drinks is not a night out skirt, it’s a nice idea that lives in a bag by 9pm. My friend Priya once described a particular skirt as “structurally sound, unlike my decision making that evening,” which is genuinely the review I’d want on my gravestone.
Length and cut matter more than most people admit. A mini with a proper waistband beats a midi that needs constant hoisting.
A leather look skirt with a bit of stretch earns its keep because it moves with you on a dance floor instead of fighting you. Pleats are lovely until you sit down wrong on a sticky banquette and they refuse to un-crease, so I’ve learned to save those for the sit down dinner part of the night rather than the bit that ends up in someone’s Instagram story at 1am.
Styling wise, this is where black does its actual job, it lets you be reckless everywhere else. A slip top with too much going on, a jumper that’s slightly too big and slightly too expensive looking tucked in badly on purpose, boots with a heel that could double as a weapon if the night calls for it. Bare legs if you’re brave or if the venue has good heating, tights if you’ve learned from experience, which I have, repeatedly.
Occasion wise it’s not just birthdays and big nights. It’s the last minute plan that starts as one drink, the leaving do that ends somewhere nobody planned, the dinner that turns into dancing because someone ordered one more bottle than sense allowed. A good black skirt should survive all three without you thinking about it once.
