I spent about four years thinking a black shift dress was a cop out. The thing you wear when you couldn’t decide what to wear. I’ve properly changed my mind, and I owe the category a small apology for that, because a good one isn’t a cop out at all, it’s the opposite, it’s the decision that ends all other decisions.
What makes a shift dress good rather than just present is the cut doing something structural. It should hold its own shape a little, skim rather than cling, and stop somewhere that flatters your particular legs, whether that’s the knee or just below. Too soft and it collapses into a slip.
Too stiff and you’re wearing cardboard to a christening. The best ones sit in the middle, a fabric with enough body to hold a line but enough give that you can actually sit down in a taxi without it riding up round your ears, which I learned the hard way outside a restaurant in Clerkenwell and have not fully recovered from emotionally.
Styling one is genuinely the fun part.
Bare legs and flat sandals in summer makes it look like you’ve barely tried, which is the whole point. Opaque tights and boots takes the exact same dress into fully sombre territory for fifty layer autumn. A blazer over the top turns it into something you’d wear to present a budget. A leather jacket does the opposite job entirely, makes it look like you’re about to leave the budget meeting and go somewhere better. Jewellery is where you get to have an opinion, gold hoops for daytime, something with more weight for evening, because the dress itself isn’t going to argue with you either way.
Occasion wise it’s doing more work than almost anything else in the black dress family. Client meetings, funerals, dinners, weddings where you’re not sure of the dress code and don’t want to overthink it at half seven on a Tuesday. My colleague Priya once wore the same one to a leaving do and a job interview in the same week and nobody clocked it either time, which she took as a compliment and I took as proof the whole category earns its keep.
