I used to think black jeans were the easy option, the thing you grabbed when you couldn’t be bothered to think, and for about six years I was wearing a pair with a weird sheen to them that made me look like I was heading to a school disco in 2004. Rich, actual black, the kind that doesn’t fade to charcoal after two washes, is a different thing entirely, and once you’ve had a proper pair you can spot a bad one across a room.
A good black straight leg jean earns its place by doing the thing skinny jeans never quite managed, which is skim rather than cling. Straight through the thigh, a clean drop to the ankle, no taper pulling it in at the hem so it just falls. That fall is the whole point. It’s what makes them look expensive even when they cost thirty quid, and what makes a cheap fabric look cheap even at three hundred.
My colleague Priya clocked mine across the office once and said “wait, are those actually jeans or are you wearing trousers pretending to be jeans”, which I’ve decided is the highest compliment this category can receive.

I’ve worn the same pair to a funeral and to a Tuesday supermarket run in the same week and neither occasion clocked the repeat.
What I’ve learned the hard way is that the ankle length matters more than anyone tells you. Too long and they pool over trainers like you’ve given up. Too short and you look like you’re wading through something. The right break sits just above the shoe, always, and that’s the detail worth trying on for before anything else about them.
