I spent years thinking blue lace was a bridesmaid’s fate, the sort of dress you get talked into for a cousin’s wedding and then quietly bin. Turns out that was a bad lace problem, not a blue problem. Once you find the right weight and the right shade of blue, something closer to ink or denim than powder puff, the whole category stops looking like a costume and starts looking like clothes.
What makes a blue lace dress worth having is the lace itself doing something, not just sitting there being pretty. A proper scalloped hem, a decent floral or geometric repeat, lace that’s been lined so it doesn’t go see through under the office lights, that’s the difference between a dress you reach for constantly and one that lives at the back of the rail next to the fete-appropriate florals. The blue should read as a colour, not a mood board, so look for depth rather than pastel, it photographs better and it doesn’t wash you out by four in the afternoon.
Styling wise, this is not a dress that needs help, but it does need editing down. One statement earring, not two. A blazer thrown over the top turns it into something you’d wear to a client lunch without anyone clocking it’s the same dress you wore dancing the week before, my colleague did exactly that and nobody noticed, which is either a compliment to the dress or an indictment of how much attention people pay at work drinks.
Boots roughen it up for daytime, a proper heel and a clutch push it towards evening, and bare legs with sandals is the only acceptable summer wedding formula, tights under lace in July should be a punishable offence.
Occasion wise, it earns its place at exactly the events people panic about, weddings where you’re not sure how dressed up is too dressed up, a christening, a big birthday dinner where jeans feel wrong and a full gown feels mad. It sits in that useful middle ground of looking like effort without looking like you tried too hard, which is, if I’m honest, the only kind of dressing up I actually believe in these days.
