I spent three summers convinced blue sleeveless dresses were a colour for other people, the sort who look sun kissed by April, and mine all made me look like I’d been left in a freezer for a week. Turns out the problem was never the colour, it was that I kept buying the same cornflower shade in the same cheap crepe, then wondering why it did nothing for me. Blue is not one colour. It’s about forty, and one of them is doing you an actual favour right now.
What I love about this category, once you stop panic buying the first one you see, is how much work the colour does without you trying. A deep ink or a proper cobalt reads as dressed rather than casual even with trainers on, which a black dress rarely manages without help.

A structured shoulder seam holds the whole thing up properly, no gaping at the armhole, no flashing your bra strap to a room full of people at a colleague’s leaving drinks (sorry, Priya, I know you saw). Look for a proper bodice or a fabric with actual weight to it. The floaty ones are lovely on a hanger and a nightmare the second there’s any wind involved.
Styling wise, treat the deeper blues like you would navy tailoring, gold jewellery, a decent sandal, done. The lighter ones want texture against them, a raffia bag, a leather jacket thrown over the top when it turns cold at 9pm and you’re stood outside a bar pretending you’re not freezing. Layer a white shirt underneath for the day version, take it off for the evening one, same dress, completely different mood.
Occasion wise this is your summer wedding guest dress, your last minute dinner dress, your “nothing else in the wash is clean” dress that still looks like you tried. Blue does more of that work than any other colour I own, once you find the right blue.
