I spent about four years buying boyfriend jeans a size too big because I thought that was the whole point of the name, and ended up looking like I’d borrowed them off an actual boyfriend who was considerably larger than me and possibly a builder. That’s not the look. A proper pair skims, it doesn’t swamp. There should be room through the hip and thigh, a bit of a drop at the crotch, but the leg still needs to know where your leg is. If you can’t tell where the denim ends and the ambient space begins, it’s gone too far.
What I want from a good pair is that lived-in slouch that somehow still holds a shape.
A slightly worn wash helps, so does a decent weight of denim, because anything too thin just goes shapeless by lunchtime and you spend the afternoon hoiking it up like you’re wading through a river. The turn up at the ankle matters more than people think too.
Even a rough, undone fold does something structural, it stops the whole thing reading as “I gave up getting dressed” and starts reading as “I decided this.”
Styling wise, the whole appeal is the imbalance. Something loose needs something with a line to it, so I’ll do a fitted tee tucked in, or a properly tailored blazer thrown over the top like I’m about to have an opinion in a meeting. Heels change the entire mood, suddenly it’s dinner not errands. Flats and a plain jumper is the version I wear on a Tuesday when I’ve decided actual effort isn’t happening but I still want to look like I tried slightly. A belt earns its keep here too, not for practicality, just to draw a waist back into the conversation.
Where they actually shine is anywhere that wants to look considered without looking like you tried too hard for it. Weekend brunches, gallery wandering, the school run if you’re the sort of parent who’s also popping somewhere nice after drop off, a casual first date where skinny jeans would feel like you’d overthought it. They’re the trousers you reach for when you want to look like you have your life together and you also cannot be bothered.
