I spent about three years thinking brown was the colour you wore when you’d given up. Beige’s sadder cousin. Chuck a denim jacket over it and it stops being precious. Put tights and boots under it in November and it becomes the thing you wear to work, a wedding, and a slightly stressful dinner with your mother in law, all in the same fortnight, without repeating an outfit anyone would remember.
Occasion wise it’s properly flexible in a way I don’t say lightly, given how often that word gets thrown around for things that are actually only good for one setting. Daytime, it wants flat boots and a coat that isn’t trying too hard. Evening, it wants heeled boots, a bit of gold, and you standing slightly straighter because you know the fabric’s doing its job. It’s the dress for the event you can’t quite dress code, and honestly, that’s most events.
