I spent about four years thinking brown was the colour you settled for when black sold out. Turns out I was just buying the wrong brown. The flat, muddy one that looks like a school satchel that’s given up. A proper brown crossbody, the kind with a bit of red or tan running through it, does something black simply can’t, it goes with more than it fights with.
The whole point of this shape is the strap. Long enough to sit across the body without cutting you in half, short enough that the bag isn’t bouncing off your hip like a pedometer.
That’s the test I actually use in a shop now, not how it looks on the hook, but whether it sits still when you walk fast. Mine gets tested on the school run, which is basically a fashion show if the runway had prams on it.
Leather that’s a bit worn in already, or that promises to wear in well, beats anything stiff and shiny. A crossbody has to survive being shoved under a coat, dropped on a pub floor, sat on at a wedding when you forget you’re wearing it. The good ones develop a sort of patina, the bad ones just look tired.
There’s a difference and you learn it the expensive way, usually with one bag that scuffed on its first outing and never recovered.
Styling wise, brown is doing you a favour because it won’t compete with anything. Navy, olive, grey, cream, black even, it sits underneath all of it instead of shouting over the top. I wear mine with jeans and a plain jumper more days than I’ll admit, and then exactly the same bag turns up again for dinner with a slip dress and no explanation needed. That’s the actual job of this bag, not being noticed, being right.
Where it earns its place properly is anywhere you need your hands free and don’t want to think about the bag again once it’s on. Travel days, work drinks that turn into three, family lunches where you’re carrying someone else’s coat by 2pm. A brown crossbody just gets on with it, which after years of glossy, high maintenance handbags feels like the actual luxury.
