I’m yet to find ear cuffs that don’t live up to these two criteria. First up: they should feel like second skin. Resting along the curve of your ear, they’re held in place by tension rather than clasps or posts. That means you don’t need a new piercing to wear them (hooray), and you don’t have to faff with undoing at the end of a busy day. Look for ones made from one continuous strip of metal in sterling silver or gold vermeil, rather than thin plated brass. They should have a hinge or gentle curve that allows a little spring – they’ll hold secure but mould slightly to your ear. Cheap ones are flat and stiff, so either flop forwards towards your lobe or jut out away from your cartilage, and it’s usually this gap that gives a cheap cuff away before anyone even leans in to take a closer look.
Aside from the fit, the real beauty of ear cuffs day to day is that they allow you to wear jewellery without committing to a new piercing. Resting high on the ear, they catch the light in a way earrings can’t, adding a decorative touch that elevates an outfit without you having to change anything else you’re wearing. One cuff on one ear looks curated rather than cluttered, and it’s one of the only pieces that can make a statement whether your personal style is minimalist or already heavy on rings and layered necklaces, as it doesn’t fight with those pieces at the lobe but instead takes prominence up on the cartilage.
And when it comes to styling: it’s less about wearing similar metals together, and more about playing around with weight and finish. Skinny and delicate looks great balanced with tiny hoops or studs on either the same ear or the other, while big and sculptural is wonderful on its own as your only piece of ear jewellery (they often look better overcrowded on your ear, as opposed to stacked). Styled with hair swept up and out of the way or tucked into a low bun, your ear cuff is front and centre; worn low under your hair, it’s more of a subtle touch that only catches light when your hair does.
They’re easy to throw on in seconds, and they don’t take anything off when you want to take them off. That’s why ear cuffs earn their keep in my kind of jewellery rotation: the stretch-from-desk-to-dinner (and everything in between) jewellery that also makes it out for hectic school run mornings. They never feel like over- or under-dressing for anywhere on that list. Having jewellery that actually works with your lifestyle, rather than the other way around is handy. It’s one of those pieces that does way more than its size lets on – which is exactly why you should have it in your every day rotation, not save it for special occasions that you’ll never take the time to ‘cuff up’ for.
