Rule number one of a successful gold sequin dress? It should impress before you even move. That sounds as much about fit as it does about actual embellishment, but it’s true. Sequins sewn onto stretch mesh or fine jersey will skim your body and lie closer to your curves; sequins bonded onto a thicker taffeta will hold their shape regardless of your movements underneath. Fit is where most gold sequin dresses fall apart. Literally. If your dress is too lose you’ll negate the whole point.
Gold should have internal boning at the bust and a properly fitted lining that echoes the cut of the outer layer, not one-size-fits-all sack that shows everywhere. It should also have enough weight in the hem to stay put when you sit down.
The length is irrelevant if the construction is right: a sturdily weighted mini will out-perform a floating midi every time. Styling it is mostly about restraint. Resist the temptation to dress head-to-toe in shine. If your top half is covered in sequins, keep your shoes simple (pumps or a block heel), hair back and off your face, no bold makeup. If you feel you need a jacket, keep it plain. Black works well. You want to keep the focus on the dress.
