Grey is the colour coats get right more often than black, mostly because it does the work without announcing itself. A good grey coat reads as considered rather than safe, provided the grey itself has some depth to it. Flat, chalky greys can look cheap under artificial light, so the ones worth owning tend to have a warmth or a blue undertone running through them, something that shifts slightly depending on the light rather than sitting there inert. The shoulder seam should meet the actual shoulder, not hang off it, and the coat should be long enough to do something for tailoring underneath rather than cutting it off mid thigh in an unflattering place. Structure earns its keep here. A notch lapel or a proper collar gives the coat somewhere to go, whereas a collarless, boxy cut needs a genuinely good drape to avoid looking unfinished.

Grey sits well against navy, black, burgundy, and any warm neutral, and it is one of the few coat colours that looks equally right over a suit, a knit and jeans, or something slightly dressed up underneath. Tonal dressing, grey on grey on grey, can look genuinely sharp if the textures vary enough that the outfit doesn’t flatten into one surface.
Occasion wise, this is the coat for the working week that also needs to survive a dinner afterwards, for travel days when you want to look put together without trying, and for anything in between smart and casual where black feels too final and camel feels too soft. It photographs well, ages well, and unlike brighter coats, never dates a look to a particular season or trend.
