I kid you not when I say I spent around three years being fully conned by barrel leg jeans. I was 110% certain they were designed with one purpose in mind – to make otherwise fabulous people think they’ve mistakenly shrunk their nice straight-leg denim that used to fit. Shouted this at my sister Priya during a BBQ summer afternoon in 2022; before three months later buying a pair of my own six whole months after that when I got bored of how everything looked in straight leg and immediately texting her to say I was sorry. She replied with “told you” and nothing else which I felt was only fair.
Where barrel-leg jeans really shine, and therefore what converted me, is that curve. It creates something a regular straight-leg just cannot. That slight bump from knee to hem gives you enough give that you don’t feel like you need to sit at your desk with your legs sucked up to your chest all day just to keep them up; but skips any of the ‘I’ve definitely not ironed these’ shapelessness of an extra wide leg. They sit ever so lightly on the hip, before slimming down ever so slightly at the thigh, then billowing out enough at the calf to sway as you walk.
This shape is all about having good heavy denim with some structure to it so when it hits that calf the curve can maintain rather than just bunch down into a sad pile around your ankles by lunchtime. Learn from my mistakes and spend the extra on a denim with a bit of heft – I tried and failed on this so badly in a pair that were so light they might as well not have existed I almost cried. They literally went from cute curved jeans to COMPLETELY straight with no bit of belly by the time I’d walked to the train station.
Speaking of reaching the train station, the length is everything with these fellas more than it is with pretty much any other jean cut. You want that hem grazing right your ankle bone or lightly hitting the top of your shoe. Any shorter and you’ll look like you’ve just pulled your jeans up to them rather than actually hemming them.
Style that cropped cut right at your ankle with a sock thick loafer or white trainers and you’ll receive more compliments than knows what to do with them. Literally. I was once stopped by a colleague mid meeting to be asked where I’d got my jeans from. I’ve never been asked that question before the day I bought these or since. Considering the amount of jeans I buy that’s saying something!
They’re also one of the few loosish cuts that are actually flattering rather than just hangin’ around your leg. Fitted top, loose bottom will pair with absolutely everything. Throw on that tight turtle neck, tuck that shirt in, hell even throw a blazer on top if you’re going for I tried looks but didn’t try vibes. They are seriously great for daily wardrobing because you can school run in them and then upgrade them enough for Sunday lunch and then wear them back down again for that noonish beers hangover you know you have the day after. After years of jeans that only seemed to suit one mood/occasion I think that for me is why they’re worth the investment.
