For nearly four years I believed that a black roll neck was just like any other black jumper but with extra fabric sewn around your neck. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Thank God I learnt this prior to purchasing one at retail price. Obviously, I ended up buying one online DAYS before work conferences in 2019 because why not do everything last minute? Mine was inexpensive so by lunchtime it had inevitably rolled down resulting in jumper version of sad sock cuffing. Let’s not make that mistake again. Here’s what you need to know.
When it comes to thickness, you want one that fits like a glove. You want it to.
You want a black roll neck that’sluxury cozy enough that when it’s tucked around your collarbones it stays THERE. Literally, take it off and if it doesn’t stay put, go thicker.
We want one that’stuffs bout heavy enough that the knit has a feel too it, so it moulds to your shape but isn’t clingy, and stays around your neck once you’ve moved away from it.
Gets too thin and you might as well slave away at your Blackticon with jewellery decisions you’re gonna regret. Go too thick and it’s winter from God know’s where. There is something in between that is perfect and once you’ve found your roll neck jackpot you’ll know within ten seconds of having it shoved over your head.
Style-wise it’s the simplest Bang****er. Pair it with some smart straight leg trousers and a blazer and you’re good to dominate an hour long meeting in under two. Throw it on top of a midi skirt and boots and you’ve basically finished 99% of the outfit, no jewellery needed though boss midi earrings will get you that extra percent. Wear it under a slip dress if you’re feeling rebellious. Trust me I thought that sounded like a bad idea too but when I saw how incredible it looked I’ve since caught myself wearing the same spiel multiple times.
Its uses for occasions are godsend. Interviews, new(ish) job briefings, when you’re trying to feel butter under that slip dress, when you want to look like you’ve got your shit 100% together on a first date. January when you realise that actually everyone else doesn’t care about Christmas they just pretended to, work gatherings you want to avoid but know you have to go to, those funeral ones especially. Dinner parties at venue’s with horrendous radiator systems. It’s also an absolute lifesaver for pictures. We all take excessive amounts of selfies and sometimes you just need to look half decent even on the days you spent twenty minutes sobbing into tissue’s because life SUCKS.
