I spent about four years thinking beige was the colour equivalent of a Tuesday. Fine, forgettable, the thing you wear when you can’t be bothered to have an opinion. I owe beige a proper apology for that, because a good beige jacket is doing more work than almost anything else on the rail, it just does it quietly, which I used to mistake for doing nothing.
The trick is that beige isn’t one colour, it’s about eleven, and a jacket that’s gone slightly stone, or camel, or oatmeal, sits against your face in a way that black or navy never quite manages. It gives you a lift without shouting about it. What makes a good one isn’t the shade so much as the shape, a bit of structure through the shoulder, a collar that holds itself up, fabric with enough weight that it doesn’t crease the second you sit down on a train.
Cheap beige goes grey and sad within a season. A proper one ages like a good coat should, it just gets softer.
Styling it is the easy part, which is exactly why I now own more of them than I’d like to count out loud. It sits happily over nearly everything, jeans and a plain top for the school run, a slip dress for something after work, tailored trousers if you’re trying to look like you’ve got your life together for a meeting. The one rule I’ll actually stand behind is contrast underneath, don’t put beige over beige over more beige, you’ll disappear into a sand dune. Something with colour, a bit of pattern, even just a proper dark denim, gives the jacket something to do.
Occasion wise it’s the jacket I reach for when I don’t know what the day’s going to ask of me, the school run that might turn into a coffee, the work thing that might turn into drinks, the flight that lands somewhere colder than I packed for. It photographs well against nearly any background, which sounds shallow until you’re stood outside a restaurant at golden hour and grateful for it. It’s not a jacket for making a statement. It’s a jacket for making everything else you’re wearing look like it was more thought through than it was, which, honestly, is the best trick in the book.
