I spent years thinking beige was the colour equivalent of saying nothing at all. A sort of shrug in fabric form. With wide leg trousers and gold jewellery, it goes properly elegant without trying. Tucked into denim with a battered leather jacket over the top, it stops looking safe and starts looking deliberate. I wore one under a slip dress at a christening last spring and my sister in law leaned over and asked where it was from, which felt like the tank equivalent of a mic drop.
Occasion wise, this is the piece for the in between moments nobody plans an outfit around, the train journey, the work lunch that becomes drinks, the airport, the wedding guest look that needs one steady layer underneath. It’s not a statement, it’s the thing that lets everything else be one. I own six now, which is either a lot or exactly right, depending entirely on your relationship with beige.
