I spent three years convinced beige was the colour of admitting defeat. Like you’d given up on having a personality and settled for looking like a napkin. Turns out I just hadn’t met a beige maxi skirt cut properly, because the wrong one does exactly that, and the right one does something completely different.
The good ones have weight to them, a proper fall, not the flimsy stuff that clings to your legs the second there’s a breeze and makes you look like you’re wading through it rather than wearing it. You want a fabric with enough body to skim rather than stick, something that moves when you walk instead of just hanging there apologetically. And the shade matters more than you’d think, there’s a whole spectrum between oatmeal and sand and biscuit, and the wrong one washes you out while the right one does the thing good neutrals are meant to do, which is make you look like you’ve made an effort without anyone being able to say exactly how.
Styling one is less complicated than people make it. A crisp white shirt tucked in, sleeves pushed up, feels like the obvious answer because it is one, it works. But I’ve had more compliments pairing mine with something unexpected, a bit of black leather, a bright knit, even a stripe, because beige is doing the quiet work in the background and letting something else have a moment. Flat sandals in the day, a heel at night, that’s really the only decision you need to make.
Where it earns its place is anywhere you want to look like you tried without looking like you tried. A long lunch that might turn into a longer dinner. A wedding where you can’t quite tell if it’s smart casual or just casual with expectations. An office that’s technically business but everyone’s abandoned the blazers. It photographs well against pretty much any backdrop, which sounds like a strange thing to praise a skirt for, but ask anyone who’s stood next to a friend in head to toe pattern in a group photo and quietly known which one of you looks better in five years.
My sister still calls mine “the picnic skirt” like it’s an insult. It isn’t. I wear it more than anything else I own.
