A good tracksuit has nothing to do with loungewear pretending to be dressed up, and everything to do with proportion. The two pieces need to have been designed together, not assembled after the fact, which shows in the way the cuffs and hem sit, the way the jacket’s shoulder actually follows the line of the arm rather than collapsing into it, and the way the trouser breaks at the ankle instead of pooling. Fit is where most tracksuits fall down. Oversized only works if the proportions are considered rather than accidental, a boxier jacket wants a trouser with some taper so the whole thing doesn’t read as pyjamas.
A slimmer set benefits from a bit of length in the sleeve and leg, pushed up or turned once rather than hemmed to nothing.
The colour that actually earns its place is usually a proper grey marl, navy or black, because they take styling in a way that novelty prints and slogans simply don’t.
Styling one well is about removing any doubt that it was a deliberate choice. A pair of clean trainers, something structured rather than sporty, does more work than people expect. Swap the jacket zipped low over a plain shirt or fine knit, and add a proper coat on top in colder months, and the whole thing stops looking like gym kit and starts looking like clothing someone thought about. Jewellery, a decent bag and a leather belt all pull the same trick, they signal intention.
Occasion wise, this is travel dressing done properly, the thing to wear on a long flight or train journey when comfort actually matters, and it works just as well for a low key weekend, a coffee run, or the kind of day that involves a lot of movement and very little formality. It is not, and should not try to be, evening wear. The best sets know exactly what they are for and do it with some conviction.
