I spent about four years thinking a black backpack for work meant whatever nylon one I’d bought for a gap year trip in 2011, still going strong, still looking like it belonged on a hiking trail rather than at a desk. My colleague Priya finally said it out loud in a lift: “is that the same bag from the induction video?” It was. That was the moment I retired it.
The good ones do something clever, they borrow the shape of a proper rucksack but lose all the outdoorsy signalling. No mesh pockets, no carabiner clips, no logo shouting about waterproofing. Structure matters more than people think.
A backpack that slumps the second you set it down looks tired by 9am, whereas one with a bit of backbone in the base sits upright on a chair, on a train floor, on the little shelf under a desk, and still looks like you meant it. Straps that adjust properly are not a nice extra, they’re the whole point, because a bag hanging too low reads as school run, not boardroom.
Styling one is less complicated than people make it. It sits happily over a coat in the depths of winter and just as easily over a plain shirt when the weather finally behaves.
I wear mine with tailored trousers most days because the contrast, sharp trousers, slightly slouchy bag, stops the whole outfit looking too try hard. It also does something useful with a dress, it takes the formality down a notch so you don’t look like you’re heading to a wedding when you’re actually heading to a Tuesday.
Occasion wise, this is the bag for the commute that involves three different modes of transport and a laptop you refuse to admit is too heavy. It’s for the conference where you need both hands free for coffee and a lanyard. It’s for the day that starts at a desk and ends at drinks, because nobody wants to be swapping bags in a work toilet at half five.
What I got wrong for years was assuming smaller meant smarter. It didn’t, it just meant I was carrying my charger in my coat pocket like an idiot. Room for a laptop, a water bottle and your dignity, that’s the actual requirement.
