I used to think a black crossbody bag was the boring choice, the thing you bought when you’d given up on being interesting. I was wrong, and I’ll say that outright because it took me three seasons of hauling a bag the size of a briefcase around London before I admitted defeat.
What makes a good one isn’t really about the black, it’s about the proportions. Too small and you’re doing that thing where your phone won’t fit and your card holder is wedged against your ribs all day. Too big and it stops being a crossbody and starts being a satchel with delusions. The good ones sit at the hip, not the waist, with a strap that doesn’t dig in when you’re carrying it for eight hours straight, and a shape that holds itself up rather than slumping the second you take your hand off it.
Hardware matters more than people admit. A cheap zip will jam exactly when you’re late, usually at a barrier, usually with someone tutting behind you.
Styling one is less about matching and more about letting it do a specific job.
Over a plain jumper and jeans it reads like you’ve made an effort without trying. With a slip dress it cuts the softness and stops the whole look feeling like you’re on your way to a wedding you weren’t invited to. Layered under a coat rather than over it, it stays put on the tube, which matters more than any styling advice ever will when you’re standing room only on the Central line.
Occasion wise, this is the bag for the day that has three different moods in it. Coffee, then a meeting, then drinks you didn’t plan on staying for. It goes to all of them without you having to think about it, which is the entire point of black in the first place, it’s not a lack of imagination, it’s one less decision at eight in the morning. The best ones earn their keep through repetition, not novelty. Mine has been to a funeral, a hen do and the school run in the same fortnight, and looked like it belonged at all three.
