I said for years that black linen dresses were a summer holiday cliche, the sort of thing you buy in a beach shop in Greece for twenty euros and wear once before it goes stiff and shapeless in a suitcase. I was wrong, and I’m saying that properly, not as a throwaway line. A good black linen dress is nothing like that. The bad ones crease like a shirt left on the floor and go boxy after one wash. The good ones move with you, soften with every wear, and somehow look more expensive the more creased they get, which is the opposite of how most fabrics behave and exactly why linen earns its reputation.
What makes one worth having is the weight and the cut working together.
Too light and it clings and creases in all the wrong places by lunchtime. Too heavy and it stands away from the body like a tent, which is fine if that’s the silhouette you’re after but murder if you wanted something with actual shape.
The best ones sit somewhere in the middle, with enough drape to move properly when you walk and enough structure to hold a waist or a shoulder line without needing a slip underneath.
Styling one is honestly the easy part, which is half the appeal. Bare legs and flat sandals for anything daytime, a stack of gold jewellery you’ve owned for years and can’t be bothered to take off, sunglasses pushed up into your hair. For evening it takes a heel and a bit of nerve better than almost anything else in a black colour palette, because the texture does the work that a print or a colour would normally do, so you’re not fighting the dress for attention. Add a linen or cotton jacket over the top if the weather turns, or a leather one if you want the whole thing to feel less holiday and more evening.
Where it earns its place is anywhere the day runs long without a chance to iron or rethink, a lunch that turns into drinks, a wedding abroad, a work trip where you need one dress to do four different things. It photographs well precisely because it isn’t trying to look pressed and perfect. That’s the whole point of it, and I’d stand by that opinion for a lot longer than twenty euros’ worth.
