I used to think a black maxi dress was the safe choice, the one you reached for when you couldn’t be bothered to think, and honestly for years I bought the wrong version of that idea. Cheap jersey, clingy in all the wrong places, hemline that pooled round my ankles like I was about to hoover the living room in it. A black maxi dress done badly just looks like you gave up. Done properly it’s the thing that gets you out the door in four minutes flat looking like you tried, even when you absolutely did not.
What separates a good one from a sad one is almost always the cut through the middle and the weight of the fabric. You want something with actual structure at the waist, a bit of drape rather than cling, and enough weight in the fabric that it moves when you walk instead of sticking to you on the tube.
Thin, slippery black fabric is a false economy every time, it creases the second you sit down and shows every seam of your underwear, learned that one the hard way at a christening and spent the whole reception standing up.
Styling it is the fun part because black gives you permission to go a bit mad elsewhere.
Gold hoops and a good bag lift it into evening territory instantly. A denim jacket thrown over the top takes it straight into daytime, running errands, picking someone up from the station, that sort of thing. Boots underneath in the colder months, a strappy sandal when it’s warm enough to show some ankle. Belt it if the dress reads too plain on its own, add a proper coat if you want to look like you have your life together on a Tuesday. It is genuinely one of those pieces that adapts to the effort you’re willing to put in that particular day, which is not something I’ll say about most black dresses.
Occasion wise it covers more ground than people give it credit for. Weddings where you’re not sure of the dress code, dinners you’ve upgraded at the last minute, work events that tip into drinks after, even a funeral if it’s cut with enough respect and not too much leg. It’s the dress that doesn’t ask you to decide in advance exactly how the night’s going to go, which, if you’ve ever tried to plan an outfit around an evening that changes shape three times, you’ll know is worth more than any print or colour could offer.
