I spent years thinking blue bodycon was a one note colour, navy or nothing, the kind of safe choice you make when you can’t decide and end up looking like you’re heading to a very serious work dinner. I was wrong, and I want to apologise to the colour properly for that, because a good blue bodycon dress has more range in it than almost anything else in that silhouette. Cobalt does something for skin tone that black never will. A cornflower or periwinkle catches light in photos in a way that flat black just swallows. Even navy, done well, has a depth to it that reads considered rather than boring. The mistake isn’t the colour, it’s assuming there’s only one shade of it worth owning.
What makes a bodycon dress actually good has nothing to do with how tight it is and everything to do with the fabric doing the work quietly. You want something with proper weight to it, a jersey or ponte that holds its shape when you sit down at dinner and still holds it when you stand up an hour later, not the thin stretchy stuff that bags at the knee the second you cross your legs. I learned that one at a leaving do where I spent the whole night tugging the hem back into place like it owed me money.
Never again. Check the seams, check the lining, and if it feels a bit like leggings with delusions of grandeur, put it back.
Styling wise, blue bodycon does the heavy lifting on its own, so the rest of the outfit should just support it rather than compete. A structured blazer over the top for anything daytime or work adjacent, sharp shoulders against the fitted line underneath. Strip that back for evening, add a decent heel, maybe a metallic bag, and let the dress be the whole point. Gold jewellery against blue is criminally underused, it warms the whole thing up.
Occasion wise this is your dinner dress, your birthday dress, your “I need to look like I tried without looking like I panicked” dress. Not really an all day option, but for anything after 6pm, it earns its place completely.
