I said for years that black wrap dresses were the fashion equivalent of a hire car, fine, does the job, forgettable the second you hand back the keys. I was wrong, and I’ll say it properly, to the dress itself: I’m sorry, you were never the problem, I just kept buying the version with fabric so thin it needed three layers underneath to survive a windy bus stop.

The wrap does the actual work a plain black dress can’t, it moves with you instead of just hanging there, it gives you a waist without a seam doing anything sneaky, and it adjusts to whatever your body is doing that particular week, which is more than most black dresses will admit to. Look for a fabric with proper weight and drape, a tie that sits and stays rather than sliding round to your back by 6pm, and a wrap front deep enough to look right but not so deep you’re doing the seated hand-to-chest manoeuvre all evening. Styling it is the easy part, which is exactly why it earns its keep. Boots and a coat thrown over the top for daytime, nothing else required, it already looks like effort you didn’t make. Heeled sandals and gold jewellery turn the same dress into something for dinner without you having to think about it twice.
A blazer over it in the office makes it look deliberate rather than last minute, even when it absolutely was last minute. My colleague Priya wore hers to a leaving do straight after work, no outfit change, just swapped trainers for heels in the loo, and someone asked where she’d “gone to get changed.”
